For Our Future

And Our Community

We Need To Stop the REZONE

An Overview - The 29 Unit Apartment Complex - Rezone

East Islip is a unique hamlet where your neighbor is often your best friend from high school.  It’s a community where our children return to buy their first house and raise their family.  It’s a community where one persons heartache becomes a neighborhood’s concern.  It’s a place where our local charities were born out of need and, because of that, they are supported by all.  Our community values are anchored in words like family, friendship, integrity, gratitude, respect, pride, and strength. This is a community that will fight for what is right and we will not lose.

On January 22, 2020 Larry Gargano, President of Greenview Properties, sent a letter to property owners who are local and adjacent to 7 & 9 Bayview Avenue, East Islip, informing of his intentions to build a 29 unit, 55+ senior apartment complex on the two parcels.  Greenview Properties is notorious for building large apartment complexes in our area.  In fact, he is currently building the apartments at Westbrook Fields (adjacent to our little league fields) and he also owns the 55+ apartment complex on Connetquot Ave called Providence on the Park, as well as several other apartment complexes in our town of Islip.   Larry needs the town to approve a rezone of these properties from Residential A to Residential C before he can build the apartments.

Our community is open to change and open to economic development and we’ve proven that with the current building developments in our area.  However, this rezone is crossing the line.  Larry is asking our town to approve a rezone in an area that has always been exclusively single family homes.  The rezone will change our community forever.  It’s a change that will inundate our family valued neighborhoods with unnecessary high occupancy apartments.  It will flood our already busy streets with more traffic.  It will change the face of our community in a way that will drive away the opportunity for our children to raise their children as we raised them.

East Islip knows how to fight for what is right and Larry will have a fight on his hands.  He is driven by money and we are driven by core family values.  Please read on about how you can help to fight the rezone of 7 &9 Bayview Ave.   Once the precedence is set, guys like Larry can buy the houses next to you and turn them into a apartment complexes.  Just look at what happened to Clinton Ave in Bay Shore, a historic neighborhood which leads to the Marina (sound familiar).

Here is Larry's proposal

Combine the two properties and build a 29 unit, 55+ apartment complex with 59 parking spaces.  Does this look like something you’d like next door to your house?  Rumor is that if Larry is successful in getting the change in zoning, he will immediately purchase other properties and add to the 29 unit proposal. Regardless of his greed, we need to stop him at this first phase.

What's our initial plan to stop Larry?

Write letters to VIP's at Townhall.

Writing letters, not emails or phone calls, but actual letters, forces the communication into the town hall record. It’s our easiest way to get our collective opposition noticed. The bigger the file at town hall the better chance to have our voices heard. Go to the documents page to download templates of letters and addresses of the Islip government decision makers.

Voice your concerns at building department and Town Hall meetings.

We will post the dates and times of the meetings and the protocol for being heard. Please check back frequently so you don’t miss an opportunity to be heard.
